it's 1:39 in the morning and i can't sleep.
a.) i'm (almost) 35 weeks pregnant. yeah. . . real comfy. and,
b.) i can't stop all the thoughts in my mind.
you've heard the quote by elizabeth stone, "making the decision to have a child is momentous. it is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
well, i feel that. times three. and the time i feel it most is at night. i lay in my bed and think about everything that could happen, everything that will probably happen, and everything that has happened. i evaluate every wrong action and word from that day and promise myself that tomorrow i will act different. tomorrow i will be more patient. tomorrow i will not drive anywhere, because "what am i thinking driving around with my kids in the car? what if...?"
and it's hard to shut off all these thoughts. because the longer i'm trying to fall asleep, the more the thoughts come, and the more thoughts that come, the longer it takes to fall asleep. it's brutal. pregnancy tests should come with this warning: "although a positive result is extremely exciting, be prepared for heartache and sleepless nights."
and what's been on my mind a lot lately is this natural detachment that is occurring between me and parker. perhaps "detachment" is the wrong word, but she's becoming more and more independent. she doesn't need me as much. i don't see her as much as i see macy and oliver. she goes to school, she plays with friends, she does her thing. i have to beg for hugs, and she's already brushing me off when i ask her questions. have i already become the "uncool mom"?
i've always said that when i had parker, the moment i became a mother, it was as if i had run into a wall. all of a sudden i was hit with emotions and feelings i never knew existed. extreme love, responsibility, guilt . . . but magnified to the most extreme degree.
then, as i started to feel like i had a handle on those emotions, i'm hit with a whole new set of emotions as suddenly this great attachment i have with her starts to stretch . . . as i become, no longer, the center of her universe. even though she is still the center of mine.
the other day she was giving me a hug (that i had to beg for), and i was holding on a little longer when she finally got annoyed and said to me, "mom, you can let go now".
well, no.
i can't.

robin. you are a gifted writer. truly a touching post. you want to start writing my posts? i'll pay you...
She will always need you, always.
I don't know whay to say.
For one thing, you didn't get your gift of writing from me.
You did get my gene for worrying. Sorry about that.
Beautiful post Robin
That is a very touching post. I had many of those same thoughts as I went to sleep last night. With Seth out of town it has really given me a chance to see my 24 hour parenting skills and evaluate them and see just how much improvement I need to make. I have heard that quote before as well and it has stuck with me because it is so true.
You are a gifted writer!
Oh I'm all teary eyed now! You put into words so effortlessly what I think every mom feels. I feel all those same emotions and try so hard to make time count. At the same time though, I don't want Maggie to think that everytime we're alone we have to have a "talk" about stuff. It's hard finding that balance between letting her grow up, but staying close. You are awesome. Such a loving mom. And the fact that you're up at night worrying shows that you and your family are going to be just fine.
you made me cry...thanks for that.
but really, thanks for that.
why am i so heartless? i started reading this and thought, "robin's going to laugh when i tell her 'you're such a mom.' in my comment"
i cried like a baby in jen's sealing ceremony. am i growing soft? i hope not. (the tears i shed weren't the typical "bff-gets-married" tears, by the way. they were the "so happy this girl was strong enough to endure the steep climb out of the deep hole she fell into" tears.) when i told co-worker greg about my involuntary tears, he said, "yeah, just imagine the emotion attached to that kind of stuff when it's your own kid."
never thought of that. tears for my bestie is the best i can do so far.
what if i go soft? wah.
so i'm in love with your blog. thought you should know.
(are there REALLY no red vines in ny??)
I completely feel what you're saying. Ramona turned 8 in the fall, 8! That's just crazy that her next birthday she'll be 9, that's like old, like not a little kid anymore. Luckily she's always been a bit clingy to me so she still gladly gives me hugs, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.
lovely post and you articulated *that feeling* just beautifully.
(stumbled on your blog somehow... hello!)
amen
its wild how kids can make your brain heart and body hurt simultaneously. I really enjoyed this post and thanks for sharing. Many times I have had similar feelings.
thank you. im crying now.
you say these things so perfectly.
