josh and i have a few ongoing disagreements... nay, "discussions". we go back and forth about a few things and i know i'm right and he thinks he's right. so i thought it would be fun to take it to the blog!
1. josh uses these for his shoes so i think it is more than acceptable for me to call him an old man. he says that they are not only for old men. but tell me, do you know a man who is not old who uses them?
2. i say if something is on sale, that is a good reason to buy it. he says just because something is on sale doesn't mean i have to buy it. to which i say we can't afford NOT to buy it!
3. josh thinks i am the only person in the entire ocean-loving world that does not enjoy going to the beach. now i know i have said that i am getting better about it, (i really think that entire post was a huge lie) because honestly, i have a long way to go. i just don't see what is so fun about taking two hours to get ready to go and sit in the sand (yuck) and worry about my kids drowning and then hauling everything (which has somehow multiplied) back to the car while carrying a kid and then having everyone scream about showering off in the cold water. somebody tell me, WHAT AM I MISSING!!!!!
4. and now for our latest debate. the other day i was telling josh how homesick i am. he replied that there was no need for me to be homesick because i "am home". i told him that no, california is home. he says that florida is my home. i say that indeed, i do live in florida, but it is not my home. so he asks me if after 20 years of living here if i will still tell people, "well i live in florida, but california is my home." i tell him that yes, i will. i am sorry josh, but for the rest of my life if i am ever referring to home i will be referring to the great salinas valley and the beautiful monterey bay. my home is and always will be the most beautiful place in the world, california's central coast.
(so, what say ye? where is home for you? are you like josh, quick to forget your hometown and ready to claim whatever city you find yourself in? or are you right, like me?)

are you ready?
1. sorry, josh, but my 63 year old dad has those shoe thingys. i'm not saying it's an old man thing, but he's older than we are and has tons in his closet. ;)
2. i'm not a shopper, so i can't really support either on the shopping debate. i DO enjoy shopping when i'm looking for a specific item.
3. i know your reasonings behind not liking the water and i support you. ;) my parents were never big beach-lovers or EVER layed out at the pool (i mean, we're talking coated i sunscreen, hat, AND white, breezy long-sleeves when outside at an all day event ~ they even try to remind me to put on sunscreen now and i'm 32). back to my original thought, i didn't care for the sand and saltwater growing up, but i sure do love it now that we live here in florida. i much prefer it to the cold, snowy winters of kansas!
4. i completely understand about the "home" thing. florida is my home now because my boys are here and we are a family. but i still tell people we go HOME for christmas. kansas will always be home, but i'm not homesick to move back (the weather probably has everything to do with it for me). my dad still says my grandmother's home in virginia is "home" and he's been living away from her for over 40 years!
loved this post!
I'll tell you what you're missing. A beach trip with NO kids. Heavenly. You should make that happen.
I'm with your husband on the shopping thing. This is my number one issue with Groupon, and why I never check their deals. If you get a killer discount on a massage that you didn't need before you saw the ad, then you wasted $30. (But if you're in the Gap and that maxi skirt you've been pining for for a month is suddenly five dollars, then BUY THAT S***!!!)
total old man. cool, but still floating in the 65-85 year old category.
i'm not a huge buy because it's on sale kind of girl. typically, if we really want something we buy it or/save buy it.
Oh, and home- yes, I'll always refer to Southern Utah as home, but I also am really homesick for my other "homes" right now too. I'm dying to hit up all my favorite shopping and food in Phoenix (plus the 80 degree weather... hello!) and I long for the Teton Mountains and atmosphere in Jackson Hole.
And why did I think you were from Southern California. I've heard/seen so many great things about Monterey. I need to get there!
1. shoe horn contraption, robin right
2. Sale thing, don't waste money, josh right
3. beach hassle, robin right
4. home is where you hang your hat, josh right
50/50 tie!
1. old man. so sorry to say it, but old man. win: robin.
2. sale offering 50% off or more = it is going home with me. win: robin.
3. i love visiting the beach...without children. and if i'm fully clothed. as soon as their are kids involved, it's a whole THING. sand is getting eaten. i'm stressing about waves. and theres not nearly enough reading/napping. ;)
4. my home will ALWAYS be eau claire, wi...where i've lived for 25 years. always, always, always. win: robin.
life win: ROBIN.
3. I enjoy the beach while we're actually there but I agree that the sand and the cold showers and hauling the gear are NO FUN.
4. I'm with Josh. But you, Robin, would fit in really well in the Middle East where 'home' is where your ancestors are from. I have students who say they're from Jordan/Palestine/wherever even if they've never lived a day in their lives there. I guess home means whatever you want it to.
!. Josh isn't old he just doesn't want his shoes to wear out before their time.
2.Sales always suck me in too.
3. Not a beach lover either. Unless it is in Mexico with no children and plenty of sun and warmth.
4. The whole reason I had to comment on this post. Where is that picture taken! The central coast is my new home and I need to do some more exploring to start loving it some more.
This post was So GREAT!
1.)I will have to agree that the shoe thing is old man. My dad has a bunch (but I have always secretly wanted some :)
2.) Not necessary to buy everything, even when they are on sale.
3.) Beach? Schmeach. I don't have an opinion on this. When we were in the Bahamas=awesome. Lake Erie=not so much
4.) Home is Chicago for me, even though we live in Cleveland. I am not sure if, ever, we move back west what it will be, but since we are not "comfortable" here, it will never BE home.
1. Okay, so Josh needs to have someone come to his defense on this one-Eli has a set of these, and he uses them. So I guess Josh and Eli can be old menish together.
2. Depends on what's on sale.
3. Not a huge fan of the beach either.
4. Home is where my honey is.
Good post.
1) I say tree shoes are for CLASSY men, not necessarily old. :) My husband uses them too.
2) I agree with this for the most part, obviously if it's something you like and have been wanting. If I've wanted something for a while and it goes on sale I just have to buy it. You win this one!
3) I loved the beach when we lived in Cayman, but there was a part of me that dreaded going (and I didn't even have kids) because it seemed like a lot of "work." I just remember hating the feeling of being hungry at the beach, so I always felt like we'd have to eat before or bring food or else we'd be miserable as we smelled the grilled burgers from hotel restaurants outside. Then I also felt like I couldn't go if I had just cleaned our apartment because we'd track a ton of sand in. I also felt like it was an entire's day event. Do these things bug you too?
4) I totally get the home thing. I feel like I don't know where to call home anymore because I haven't lived in AZ since high school and my parents live there part time and UT part time and then GA doesn't feel like home, but neither does UT since we were only there the last two years. But, I can see why you'd call CA your home even after all these years. You win this one too! Also, I'm with Kate, I thought you were from Southern California too. Monterey is absolutely gorgeous!
Ben owns those shoe things... He also wears old spice, so maybe he's old man, too?
Ben hates when I utter the words "it was on sale!"
I love the beach. Love love love.
Southern California is home. Even though I live in Boca. (although I really like what Angela said: "home is where my honey is")
!. Just embrace it Josh. There are certain things about me that are totally "Grandma-ish" but I don't mind admitting it. You can call me a Grandma because I like to go to bed early, and I don't like music to be played loud. It's perfectly acceptable to call him an "Old man" for putting those wooden contraptions in his shoes. I've never seen anyone but an old man use them.
2. I'm with Josh.
3. I love the beach...but maybe not as much as I think I do, because we RARELY go for all of the reasons that you listed.
4. Hmmmm. We just moved to Hollister and I absolutely love it here! I would rather claim Hollister as my "Home" than Salinas. But if I ever moved really far away, I think I would always feel that California is my home.
Home is where you feel the most connected. I think as a family we consider Ithaca still our home. Definitely not AZ or the other spots we've lived a couple of years at a time. And neither of us would ever want to go back from where we came from. But no, I don't think home is where you are, it's the place that owns your heart and you always long to be.
This is from a 60+er.
1. I was using 'shoe trees' at a very young age, probably 18 or 19. I was taught to use them in my golf shoes to help them last longer, meaning if you did not use them, the leather would crack at the top of the shoe where the toe bend occurs. So, did you want to know that much? Of course nowadays, it is ludicrous to use shoe trees on Tennis shoes or sandals. But for Church shoes, yes. I have a pair of wing-tip dark mahogany shoes that have outlasted two sole replacements and they still look new on the top. How about them apples? score 1 for Josh
2. Jan buys things now from Salvation Army or Goodwill, so it is moot point. Is there such a thing as a sale at Goodwill? And Princess, don't forget that we still have over a $1000 worth of cheerleading outfits waiting to be sold to some lucky person of teenage years. Any (parents of future teenagers) takers out there? They are on sale and will go fast, so hurry!!! Score 2 for Josh
3. I have never liked the beach as a final destination point. Perhaps it is because of my golf upbringing. Sand on a golf course is aptly described as a 'hazard', so...need I say more. Score 1 for Robin
4. When we first settled here in Salinas, Mom could not stand the foggy and moisture filled days along with what seemed like endless gray-skies. She was a beach loving Southern Calirfornianite. But just ask her now about Salinas and the area. So , the moral of the story is, Florida will grow on you. you just have to get used to the fact everything is turned around, ie, the sun rises over the ocean and sets over the land. Would it help if we moved out there?? Tie score on this one. Fun post Princess. Love Dad
1. Old Man.
2. My theory is, if I wouldn't pay full price for it, why would I buy it on sale just because it is on sale? I must not need or want it if I wouldn't pay full price for it, therefore NOT needing it only because it is on sale. :)
sorry. :(
3. LOVE / HATE beach. Yes, could do without the sand, but love the view, especially in Carmel. I will sacrifice the sand for Carmel. :)
4. Home is and will always be Salinas/Monterey... and I have been in Fresno for 17 years.
-tell josh that spencer uses shoe horns too. twinners!
-like you, i'm a sucker for a good sale, not saying it's right, but...
-the beach is my favorite place in the world. the beach with kids is a completely different story.
-this is only an issue because you're from such an amazing place. it's hard to top the coast of central california.
Ha...loved that post.
1. Sorry to vote for Josh on this one but Sam has used those as long as I've known him. We got married when he was 24. So, maybe they're just crazy together.
4. And Home...make California your home again. I would love that!
where the crap are you? :)
From Josh's Dad:
1) Shoe Trees are like certain "girl" things that find a place in your heart, seem functional, and just hang on. Robin, I bet you have an equivalent somewhere in your closet!
2) Sales. . .as I once read, girls will buy something they don't need if its on sale, and guys will buy something they do need but pay twice as much as they should.
3) Beaches. . .we found one on the Southern Coast of Africa that saved our sanity during our mission, but there were no kids, no sand, and only rolling surf.
4) Home. . .is where your emotional life was or is nurtured. . .so you naturally connect that place with fond heart-memories. . .I suspect that home would be where Mom and Dad gave us love or where we nurtured the lives of our children. I don't think we call a place home because of the weather or scenery.
For me, home is. . .portable right now. . .because we're coming back "home" to family real soon.
