you see through, right to the heart of me

-i pass by denny's almost every day and it taunts me with its "kids eat free on tuesday" sign. i knew that in a moment of weakness (aka, when josh is gone) i would end up in there all by myself with the kids. and today was that day. i sent a desperate text to aubry ,"josh is out of town and i'm about to take the kids to denny's for dinner by myself. stop me. tell me that's stupid." she could not talk me down from the ledge, so we did it. we went in. the kids were freshly showered and pajama'd straight from swim lessons, and parker was without shoes. it was classy all the way. and even though oliver found a love for catapulting grapes from his spoon and squeezing out his own ketchup, the $13 was worth not having to clean the kitchen...

-about 95% of the time i'm getting into my car in a parking lot, the person parked next to me is getting into their car at the same time. what are the chances that out of all the cars parked in a parking lot, two people parked next to each other will be loading up at the same time? in my case, the chances are huge.

-a couple months ago, i made the mistake had the pleasure of introducing the kids to "i've got nothing", the whitney houston classic. it came on the in the car and i belted it out like any awesome mom would do. complete with dramatic gestures and vibrato. parker was NOT having it, but macy laughed the whole time and oliver loved it. he loved it so much that he requests that i sing it all the time. no really, all the time. and now it is his new bedtime song. he sings along and gets the hugest smile on his face when i get to "i don't really need to look very much further..."

-sawyer is climbing onto everything. my fourth kid, my first climber.

-a two-day girls trip should really be considered a two-week ordeal. i say this because you need to put into account the days before i left that i "checked out" because i was so excited, and then the one day of traveling, the two days in the city, the one day traveling home, and then the additional ten days it has taken to recover. it's been a slow detox.

Denny's tempts me with that same sign. I've been too chicken to actually go alone with all the kids though. Job well done to you. On another note, do you happen to know where our husbands are right now, at this very second? At Outback. Without us. I just keep thinking this is not right. Just zip yourself up in his carry-on next time, will you?

I hold strong, strong, strong to the theory that every vacation--no matter how long--deserves one week on either side. A week to prep, and a week to deflate and join normal life again.

That said...you are not the only one who is tempted by the Denny's Kid's Eat Free sign. I am too! And, I'm childless. So, happy to see that one of us cashed in on that sign! :)

For the record, I gave it a solid effort. I said something like "you'll get the "youve got your hands full" line... and exhibiting financial restraint of your own free will may score silent points in your husband's mind...." (maaaaaybe in the form of a plane ticket??!!?!)

But it didn't work. I think you already had your mind made up. But - you didn't tell me it was kids eat free day/$13. That would have changed things.

I love Dennys too - they should give you a free meal for the good advertising you just gave them!

My 4th is my first climber, too! What is up with that? He's also the first one to move chairs throughout the house so that he can climb up and reach whatever he wants. Just yesterday he was playing outside and I found him on top of the garbage can!

Also, I experience the same parking lot phenomenon that you experience... I have no explanation for it though! At first I thought it was because we must have arrived at about the same time, but it happens to often for that to be the case.

so i read your blog and laugh, send love to the back of sawyer's cute head, and move on. then, several blogs later, i realize something -

whitney houston is still singing in my head.

this is almost as bad as that time you posted about music from our senior year. hated that.

Kids love Denny's. Seriously. I will bribe my kids with Denny's. Take that Michelle Obama and your healthy kids movement.
