it's not that kind of hula

last weekend i went to portland for a very special occasion.

when a friend like kehaulani gets married, you go. no matter how far, no matter the cost. you just go. no questions.

kehaulani and i have known each since we were ten. i remember the first time i saw her. . . she walked into our rowdy primary class with her scriptures and the aura of an angel and we all straightened up a little and pretended we were righteous.

as the years went on we became great friends. through middle school, high school, young women, girls camp, efy, hawaii, and being roommates (twice), i always knew what a great friend i had in kehaulani. she was always behaving, i was always misbehaving... she was always studious, i was always un-studious... she was always reverent, i was always, well, irreverent. but as opposite as we were (are), we have a sweet friendship and love for each other that i will always cherish. she's the kind of friend that is unwavering, loyal, and fun. the kind of friend that i can say, "peeping ant" or "rustle" and she knows exactly what i'm talking about and we can laugh about our awesomeness.

so last weekend i went to portland. i wouldn't have missed it for anything.

*and in reference to the title of my post: kehaulani surprised her family and everyone at the reception by performing a traditional hawaiian hula. now, if you know kehaulani, this was probably akin to pulling out her own eyelashes or poking her eyes with forks, but she did it to honor her father who passed away three years ago. it was beautiful. absolutely beautiful. but just before she started her brother plopped a chair down right in front of her for her new husband to sit front and center. to which she replied, "it's not that kind of hula".

i died laughing. . . . but then i stopped because she was doing a beautiful hula. i know when to be serious.

she is beautiful. i've always wanted a complexion like hers. and why haven't i said this before- but i seriously love your hair. I'm thinking of taking a pair of scissors to mine. I'm thiiiis close.

p.s. when you have a minute between being awesome and mothering and wifeing (I made that up just now) please stop by and tell me what animal i am. I think my kids are moles- or at least they were as babies. i can't look at someone and not think about what animal they are since your post.
ha!

Everything you said about you and Kehaulani goes the same for me and her mom Eva.

I agree, the hula was the most special part of the whole evening.

It was great going to Portland to be there for Kehaulani, but also it was great to get to see you too.

Too wierd, Robin. My best friend in Oregon was also at Kehaulani's wedding. They were roomates at BYU while we were there, and that is how I kind of know Kehaulani as well. It's a small world in the LDS community...
