lovey

while in california, we had a very frightening experience.
we lost oliver's lovey.

we were leaving a quilt show with my mom when i realized lovey was nowhere to be found.  i went back and retraced our footsteps, feeling hopeless.  i asked all the ladies at the information tables if anyone had seen ollie's lovey, and they very sadly told me "no".  they took down my phone number and a description of oliver's most prized possession, but i think they only did that to make me feel better.
after searching the ground in the last building we had gone into, i approached the information table.  a group of lovely lady quilters were gathered there and i made my plea one last time.
"has anyone turned in anything to the lost and found?"
a lady replied, "everything's been picked up.  but what is it you're looking for?"
"a light brown lovey.  it's like a blanky with a teddy-bear head . . ."
at that, all the ladies gasped and we rejoiced together as one of the ladies pulled out from behind the table the one thing that could make my life go on.  lovey!
i clapped and jumped up and down, tears rolling down my face (well, almost) and everyone clapped with me.  it was truly joyous.

during my search i had time to reflect.  oliver has loved that lovey since he was two months old.  from the moment we gave it to him, lovey has brought him instant calmness.  what would he do without lovey? would he ever sleep again?  would there ever be peace in the ladle household if lovey wasn't found?  how could we ever replace lovey?
but luckily, we never had to find out.

the girls also have lovies.  parker's are blanky (a blanket that was actually made for macy) and bunny lovey (a blanket with a bunny head that grammy gave her when she was eight months old).  and for macy, it's her ducky she got for easter last year.  she LOVES that ducky.  if i ever mention anything about anyone coming over to our house, her first response is, "no, me, ducky!" with a huge scowl on her face.  in other words, "they better not take my ducky!"

what lovies do your kids love?

That was a happy moment when Ollie's lovey was found. Can't imagine (Ollie's) life without it. Love the pictures.

It's funny what they get attached to. I love pictures of kids sleeping, hugging something so tight.

Oh man, it's lovey central over here. Nataile has a disgusting bear that she calls Yellow Bear. She used to have the exact same one in green but we lost it many years ago, and just when she was finally over it - bam! Grandma shows up with a yellow twin. That bear is truly a mess, but she loves it.

Bea loves her "Star Blankie," but was never into dragging it around, thank goodness.

Dexter loves burp cloths. They have to be the exact right ones, though. Luckily, we have many of them and can purchase more if he loses them all!

All three of them hold their loveys up to their faces as they suck their thumbs.

Who knows what Calvin will want! Maybe he'll be my sole child who rejects the lovey concept. Unlikey, though. :)

So glad you found Oliver's and you didn't have to suffer through the reprogramming! :)

uh, i have this thing with my burt's bees chapstick. that's my lovey. i have them stashed all over the house and in various bags as well. i get frantic without one, not to mention parched.

as for emmy, she's over that phase, but she used to be quite attached to a little raccoon. once we thought we had lost Rusky, and your darling mom sent us another to replace him. of course, the first Rusky eventually returned from adventureland and now has a twin brother. that's what emmy said, at least.

evan has a blue blanket that my college friend angela made for him when he was born. he takes that blanket everywhere and even has an alter-ego called "blankie man". he loves to play with the fringe and suck his thumb, he's such a linus :)
